MDRCC Ride Adventures & Photos

Recent Events

Memorial Day Weekend 2016 – Santa Ynez Valley – Henry, Daniel, Tony & Cathy, Mike, Keith and Scott spent a beautiful Memorial Day Weekend riding the backroads of the Santa Ynez Valley region, including Buellton, Solvang, and Lompoc. With a wine-tasting ride on Sunday, it was a great way to celebrate the holiday weekend!

2015 San Diego Excellent Adventure – A great turnout of 17 MDRCC riders enjoyed a beautiful day to ride an updated scenic route from Irvine to San Diego. (Click the title for the photo gallery)

Malibu-Piuma Ride – One of our favorite, and most challenging, climbs in the Santa Monica Mountains.

2014 MDRCC San Diego Century – A few shots from last year’s club century ride to San Diego.

Nichols Canyon Ride

IMG_1897-2Our recent assault on Nichols Canyon was well attended, with a brief stop at the LA City scenic overlook, where a friendly visitor from Ohio was recruited as photographer.

Annual Winter Party

MDRCC PartyThe MDRCC Annual Winter Party and Foodfest was held this year at the Santa Monica home of David and Cheryl Moss. The affair was well-attended, including long-time alumni (Jerry and Joanna Mann, Aaron Kirsch & family, Mardi Margowsky), as well as most current and newbie members. As always, the traditional MDRCC Gift Exchange brought out the best in greed and competitiveness in the group, but also provided lots of laughs in the process. The highlight of the evening was the distribution of the new club jerseys, a great way to cap off another super year of MDRCC rides and activities! Check the photo gallery for the party pics.

Sunday “PCH to the Rock” Ride

Some MDRCCers at the Rock

One of the best ways to enjoy the Southern California coastline, the ride up Pacific Coast Highway to the Point Mugu Rock provides an opportunity to appreciate where we live and ride. On a recent Sunday, MDRCC riders enjoyed one of these quintessential SoCal days…ideal weather, frequent taliwinds, and only one flat. Life doesn’t get much better!

2013 San Diego Century

Sponsored by the Orange County Wheelmen, the Amtrak Century has become one of the most popular SoCal centuries. In addition to the scenic ride from Irvine to San Diego, the big draw is the Amtrak train ride back from San Diego. Tired legs don’t seem to seem to deter the riders from enjoying the full-on party atmosphere that prevails. This year, two MDRCCrs, Henry Choy and Erik Stokien, made the ride, and reported another excellent Amtrak.

Also this past year, the club re-instated its own San Diego Century. We followed essentially the same route as the OCW Amtrak Century and took the train back from San Diego to our starting point at the Irvine Amtrak Station. Our SAG vehicle for the trip was piloted by Larry Bump, who also crafted a great rig in his pickup truck for transporting our bikes from San Diego back to Irvine. (Larry may have a permanent role in this ride.)

IMG_0439Since the consensus was so positive, it looks like it will be back in our annual ride list as one of our out-of-town rides. There is also some discussion about making it a two-day trip: we’d ride down on Saturday, spend the night in San Diego or Mission Beach, do a recovery ride on Sunday, and take the train back Sunday afternoon. Stay tuned for updates.
