MDR at Solvang Metric, Saturday, November 8, 2014

Usually held the first Saturday in November before clocks fall backwards the next day, this edition was delayed a week for logistical reasons.  The time change helped warm up the normally 40F start at 7:30 a.m. to a balmy, short-sleeve 50s as well as lift the rising sun out of our eyes on the early eastward sectors of the parcours.  The latter is particularly important to safely navigate a mass start that includes less skilled riders.  And BTW, the Solvang Metric doesn’t start/finish in Solvang, but in Buellton, three miles west.  Accompanying these wrinkles in the space-time continuum were the rare sightings of an MDRider at a late-season supported ride plus a Grand Tour winner in a local ride.

 

As he rolled up to the start, I recognized that the rider in the distinctive pink and blue Lampre kit was not a poser, but Chris Horner, the 2013 winner of the Vuelta a Espana.  He was talking with fans and posing for pics with them.  My cheapie phone doesn’t do selfies, so the best I can offer is a pic of Chris with another rider.
